Livestock guardian dogs are special dogs.

They are often independent, highly observant and territorial, and they may make decisions for themselves rather than constantly looking to their human for direction. These qualities are part of what makes a livestock guardian dog what they are, but they can also create challenges in everyday life with people.

When independence meets city life

City life places many demands on a dog.

People pass close by. Bicycles and e-scooters move past. A neighbour or postman suddenly come up the stairwell. Other dogs appear around the corner. Visitors enter your home. Buses and U-Bahn trains can be crowded.

A dog with strong territorial instincts or a strong need to monitor their surroundings may perceive these situations differently from a dog who naturally looks to people for guidance.

Training is therefore not about turning a livestock guardian dog into a completely different type of dog.

It is about understanding their natural characteristics and finding ways to live with them successfully.

Other dogs and people

A livestock guardian dog does not have to love every person or every dog.

But it is important that you can recognise when your dog wants to handle a situation themselves and when they need your support.

We can work on:

• calmly passing other dogs

• creating appropriate distance

• building orientation towards you

• managing situations around your home

• welcoming visitors

• understanding and managing territorial behaviour

• dealing with people and environmental stimuli in the city

The aim is not to simply train away warning signals. Growling, staring or attempts to create distance can provide important information about how your dog is experiencing a situation.

Loose-leash walking and orientation

With a large, independent dog, good lead manners are not only convenient, they can be essential for safety and control.

That does not mean your dog has to walk closely beside you at all times.

We work on helping your dog orient towards you and enabling the two of you to navigate situations where there is little space or a lot of stimulation.

For example, on a narrow pavement, when another dog approaches, outside a café or while waiting at a traffic light.

Livestock guardian dogs and off-leash freedom

Recall can also require a different approach with livestock guardian dogs.

A dog who is naturally inclined to make independent decisions may have different prerequisites for a reliable recall than a dog who is highly people-oriented by nature.

We therefore look honestly at what is realistic and safe for your individual dog.

This may mean building recall step by step, using a long line or initially creating other forms of controlled freedom.

Not every dog needs to be off lead everywhere.
